What are Classroom Conversations?
In order to fulfill MIC’s mission of inspiring communities to understand global issues and cultures in an ever changing world, the International Classroom Connection program brings international speakers into Minnesota classrooms to meet face-to-face with students to talk about world cultures. These conversations take shape in the following ways:
- Classroom Conversations are 30-60 minute conversations with one or more international speakers. The speaker(s) interact with your students by telling about different primary aspects of their culture(s) and then open up the discussion for questions. You may wish to have a single conversation or a series of 3 discussions. These events are available only in the Twin Cities Metro area.
- World Cultures Days are a half or full day event, for an entire school or grade which incorporates multiple classroom conversations with different speakers as well as other activities. These events are in high demand, so there is limited availability.
- Greater Minnesota Conversations take place outside of the Metro Area. Speakers take a one or two day trip to classrooms in select communities in Minnesota. In addition to the classroom conversations, the speakers are also hosted overnight by community members in the area.
- Introduction to Classroom Conversations are for the benefit of teachers to learn about the use of multicultural resources in the classroom. These workshops are held at the MIC office, a centralized location, or can be custom fit and held on-site for your school.
You can observe an event at another school if you’d like. To learn more about how to build cultural conversations into your curriculum, call us at 612.625.4421.
